Get Help with Energy Costs

No one should have to choose between keeping warm and having food to eat. If you're finding it hard to pay your gas or electricity bills, there is support to help you.

Your Energy Supplier

Your gas or electricity supplier can’t cut off your power without helping you first. They must offer ways to help you pay, like a prepayment plan. If you’re struggling, speak to your energy company as soon as possible – they may be able to help

Support from your council

Your local council might be able to help with energy costs. This help is called the Household Support Fund or Welfare Assistance. You don’t need to be getting benefits to apply.

Energy Price Cap

The government has been reviewing and at times increasing the Energy Price Cap. This doesn’t mean that’s the most you’ll pay. The more energy you use, the more you pay. However, it limits how much companies can charge per unit of energy and for the daily standing charge.

Free help from HEAT

The Home Energy Advice Team (HEAT) gives free advice to people struggling with energy costs. They can help you ynderstand your energy bills, pay what you owe, fix problems with your energy company, and use the right energy systems for your home

Are you getting all the help you can?

Our Welfare Benefits Team can help you check if you're missing out on money or support. They can also help you apply for benefits, explain how the system works, and point you to other helpful organisations. In 2024/25, they helped customers claim over £1 million they didn’t know they were entitled to.
