Board and Committees
As at March 2026 we have eleven Board members, of which five are members of Risk and Audit Committee (RAC) and four are members of Remuneration Employment Conditions Committee (RECC).

The Board ensures the management control, accountability and good conduct of the Association.

The purpose of RECC is to lead on the recruitment of Board Members, make decisions on annual pay awards, commission reviews, and make recommendations to Board.

The purpose of RAC is to consider, from an audit and risk perspective, all matters relating to the activities of the Association.
Customer Engagement
Our Customer Engagement Structure is shown below:
The Tenants' Voice (TTV) is the core group for scrutiny, oversight, and customer accountability. TTV works directly with Board representatives, has a direct link to Board Meetings and attends each Board meeting.
Board Trainee Programme
North Star, in partnership with Beyond Housing, Gentoo, Thirteen Group and the Housing Diversity Network, launched a two-year programme to develop the Board members of the future. The programme - the first of its kind in the North East - focuses on increasing diversity at Board level.
Applications were particularly encouraged from people from ethnic minority communities, the LGBTQ+ community, people with a disability, women, and young people, all of whom are significantly under-represented at Board level locally, nationally, and internationally.
The first cohort of twelve trainees completed the programme after receiving comprehensive training, shadowing local Boards, and being supported by experienced mentors.
Following its success, a second round of the programme launched in summer 2025. Four new trainees are currently taking part in the two-year scheme, continuing the work to create more inclusive and representative leadership across the housing sector.
The remuneration of Board trainees is £1,800 per annum.
